Boiled linseed oil provides a more durable, long-term, and natural protective barrier, penetrating and hardening to create a lasting finish, particularly beneficial for both metal and wooden handles. WD-40, while excellent for displacing water and offering quick, light protection, is more of a short-term solution and may evaporate over an entire winter. For comprehensive winter storage, boiled linseed oil is often recommended for its robust, enduring protection. WD-40 can be a useful quick top-up during the active season or for initial water displacement before a more substantial coating is applied.
